Last year, I got a reading workbook for Lexi that helped teach her reading in a way that was best suited for her (and mine) learning style. Let's just say, I'm not a big fan of sight words being the main emphasis, which is becoming common. So my goal was to have her be an independent reader before starting school. But, also like myself, she can be stubborn. So the first attempts last year were less successful. She needed some motivation... because the initial lessons are tough for someone who doesn't know how to read!
I finally sat down and came up with a plan.
We had 100 lessons to get through.
I printed out 10 caterpillar reward charts, each with 10 sections to color.
I took 10 envelopes and placed a reward on each envelope (for example: a new book, a movie rental, a kid's meal, ice cream cone, etc.)
Then I created one big envelope- the reward for completing all 100 lessons. (A trip to the local children's museum)
For each lesson completed, she colored one section on the caterpillar.

After completing the caterpillar (10 lessons), she picked a prize envelope to put him in. That envelope then went into the big envelope.
Once all 10 envelopes were in the big envelope, she was finished!
Great Job Lexi!
We will probably go to the museum either this Friday or next week sometime. I'll try to get some pictures to share then :-)
Now as soon as I tell the kids to calm down or sit still for any period of time, this little girl has a book in her hand. I'll take being ignored for a book over a video game or movie any day though!
